Emergency First Aid at Work Course

Overview

This course is designed for low risk work places where the first aid needs assessment indicates that this level of training is adequate. Please refer to the Health & Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, Approved Code of Practice and Guidance [L74] for further details.

Delegates will be taught life saving skills and how to act calmly and effectively in an emergency situation. The contents of the course are as follows:

Introduction to First-aid Care of the Unconscious Casualty Definition of first-aid Level of Response Aims of first-aid Examination of a casualty Priorities DRS ABC Recovery Position Calling for Help Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation Responsibilities & Legislation Causes and treatment of shock Disposal of the casualty

Causes of Unconsciousness and Treatment Recognition and treatment of Asphyxiation/ choking Bleeding Heart Attack Minor injuries Diabetes First Aid Kits Epilepsy Stroke
Certification

Delegates are assessed by the trainer during the course to ensure that they achieve all learning outcomes. An Approved Certificate of Competence will be awarded on successful completion of this course.

The HSE have stated that it is best practice to carry out first aid annual refresher training to ensure retention of knowledge and an EFAW course should be repeated every 3 years to ensure certification remains valid.

Teaching Methods

Training materials include Powerpoint presentation, DVD presentations, workbooks, first aid quiz, first aid scenarios and first-aid manuals.

Candidates are encouraged to participate fully in the course and discussion of work place situations is encouraged.
