Healthy Working Lives

First Aid at Work Course (18 hrs / 3 days)

Subsequent to risk assessment within the workplace, employers may feel that there are sufficient risks or employee numbers etc. to merit Health & Safety Executive Approved First Aid at Work Training for designated individuals. This course provides students with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of first aid practices to give them the confidence when dealing with emergencies that take place within the work place. Students will learn how to assess and manage a diverse range of possible first aid situations.

Prerequisites to Training

This course is suitable for any one who may or may not have had prior training.

Course Syllabus

Day One

Introduction to First Aid Assessing an Emergency Situation & Passing on Information Primary & Secondary Survey Recovery position (including Spinal Recovery Position) Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Circulatory System & Common Disorders Airway & Breathing Problems Wounds & Bleeding including dealing with Foreign Bodies Contents of a First Aid Kit & Practical Bandaging Shock Scenario Work & Recap

Day Two

Crush Injuries Injuries to Bones, Muscles & Joints Recap of Primary, Secondary Survey, Recovery Position & CPR Burns & Scalds Epilepsy Diabetes Eye Injuries Scenario Work & Recap

Day Three

Poisoning Extremes of Heat & Cold Causes of Unconsciousness Recap of Primary, Secondary Survey, Recovery Position & CPR Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) Accident Books, Regulations & Legislation, Prevention of Accidents

Certification

On successful completion of an assessment, the student will be awarded with a Health and Safety Executive Approved First Aid at Work Certificate.

The HSE have stated that it is best practice to carry out first aid annual refresher training to ensure retention of knowledge and a requalification course should be repeated every 3 years to ensure certification remains valid.

Teaching Methods

Training materials include PowerPoint presentation, DVD presentations, workbooks, first aid quiz, first aid scenarios and first-aid manuals.

Candidates are encouraged to participate fully in the course and discussion of work place situations is encouraged.
