Free Health and Safety Service

The NHS Healthy Working Lives service provides free and confidential advice and support on any workplace health and safety issue.

Why is it free?

There is no catch or hidden costs.

We understand that smaller businesses have the same health problems as those big businesses, but small they may not have the help in - house to deal with them or indeed prevent them. By helping small businesses manage safety more effectively we can reduce accidents, illness and ill health and save the business and the NHS unnecessary expense. 

We can support small businesses make essential improvements that will make them safer and healthier places to work.

How can we help you?

Our advice and support is free and confidential and includes:

  • National Adviceline - Speak to a Health and Safety or Occupational Health Adviser
  • Healthy Working Lives Advisers are available for workplace visits
  • Health and Safety Management Guide- ‘Safer Work Healthier Business’

The Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives

The Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives, part of NHS Health Scotland, aims to improve the health of the working age population, in workplaces of all types and sizes across Scotland. The principle focus of Healthy Working Lives is to work with employers to enable them to understand, protect and improve the health of their employees. This also means they will be better placed to support those with health problems who have re-entered work, to remain in work.   This is done through customer-focused solutions and services, the outcomes of which contribute directly to the ambitions of Health Works and to the Scottish Government's National Outcomes. These include:

  • A Healthier Workforce.
  • Decreased sickness absence and presenteeism in workplaces.
  • Safer and healthier workplaces.
  • Improved productivity of individuals.
  Healthy Working Lives services include:    
  • National Adviceline 0800 019 2211, offering free and confidential expert advice on workplace health (health promotion, health & safety, occupational health and vocational rehabilitation) to individuals and employers in all sizes of workplaces.

  • Adviser Support.  Free and confidential Workplace Visits are carried out by our team of specialist Healthy Working Lives Advisers, providing practical, face to face advice on any issues related to occupational health, safety and wellbeing.

  • Templates & Resources.  Access to tools, templates and completed examples (including risk assessment forms) to support employers in dealing with a broad range of workplace safety and health issues.

  • Training & Events. Designed to develop employers’ understanding, knowledge and skills, our suite of interactive training and awareness sessions cover a range of health topics such as Health and Safety, Mental Health and many more.

  • Healthy Working Lives Award Programme. The Healthy Working Lives Award Programme supports employers and employees to develop health promotion and safety themes in the workplace in a practical, logical way, that's beneficial to all. It offers organisations a structured path to a healthier workplace with the benefits of a nationally recognised Award Programme
