HR Services Scotland unveils innovative social media policy and strategy package

HR Services Scotland, the innovative niche employment issues specialist, is adding a comprehensive social media strategy package to the list of services it offers its fast-growing client base.

The specialist human resources consultant, which celebrated its fifth anniversary at the end of last year, is responding to demand from clients for a coherent and consistent way to deal with one of the most fundamental revolutions ever to affect the workplace.

The leading provider of human resources, employment law and health and safety services across the UK wants to ensure that clients have a practical and transparent social media policy in place which allows productive use of the technology.

HR Services Scotland managing director Andy Purdon said: “Social media use is now a requirement in the workplace, not only for internal communication but to allow staff to interact with customers and to facilitate advertising and marketing.

“But there is still the need to ensure that it is not used to the detriment of the company and, to achieve that, it is necessary to have a firm policy in place with clear guidelines on use, functionality and restrictions.”

Mr Purdon pointed out that social media is fast-changing and constantly evolving. Facebook users now log an estimated eight billion video views a day, and even relatively new entrant Snapchat now has more than 200 million active users.

A recent survey by Harvard Business Review showed that just 12% of those using social media feel they employ it effectively, creating a skills gap which can lead to lost productivity and business value.

Mr Purdon said: “Creating the right policy for a company depends on the sector in which it operates and the company’s existing culture. Often what is needed is a re-appraisal and re-affirmation of strategies or policies which are in place but which perhaps are not being adhered to.

“Our specialists can hold ‘toolbox talks’ sessions with employees which spell out their rights and responsibilities and emphasise elements which are already in the employee handbook, with the ultimate aim of making sure everyone knows where they stand.”

The new social media package is the latest product from HR Services Scotland which operates in England, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as well as the Central Belt of Scotland. The Lanarkshire-based company specialises in HR, H&S, employment law and profiling and has a small, but fast-growing training business.
