SCC Comment on British Chambers of
Commerce Economic Survey

Commenting on the publication of the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) Quarterly Economic Survey for the second Quarter of 2012, Liz Cameron, Chief Executive of Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC), said:

“The Scottish figures for the British Chambers of Commerce economic survey again portray a sharp differential between relatively buoyant manufacturing businesses and a more pessimistic service sector.  This underlines the need for a diverse economy in Scotland as we move away from a reliance on the public sector in terms of securing Scottish economic growth.

“Scottish Chambers of Commerce will be drilling down further into Scotland’s economic data next week when we publish our own Quarterly Business Survey as we look to provide a clearer picture of where the Scottish economy stands at this time.  However it now looks increasingly likely that Scotland may be about to follow the rest of the UK into a technical double-dip recession, despite the encouraging reports we have been receiving from businesses in the first half of this year.

“Against this background, it is extremely welcome that the Scottish Government are actively pursuing a path of maximising capital investment in our economy with the limited resources they have at their disposal, and we would encourage the UK Government to follow this positive lead and free up even more resources to help get our economy kick started again.”
