Weaving Musical Threads

Thursday 3rd November 2011

Music Nation is a UK wide celebration on 3 and 4 March 2012, a countdown event of the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad. Music Nation was initiated by a steering group including the BBC and Making Music, an umbrella group that supports amateur music throughout the UK.

Projects were being sought from across the UK, ones with inspirational ideas - a surprising, exciting and innovative project inspired by the area we live and work 1in, its history and its place in the world

Through membership of Making Music by various amateur groups in Renfrewshire, a bid was entered to be part of Music Nation. After months of waiting patiently, Renfrewshire's bid was approved by the Director of the London Festival 2012 and the Culture Team of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG).

Weaving Musical Threads is the only Scottish Making Music, Music Nation project.

A committee of local volunteers came together to produce Weaving Musical Threads to facilitate showcasing the full breadth of talent and activity that exists across Renfrewshire, demonstrated through ambitious and creative partnerships, exhibitions and musical performances. What began as a music event evolved into a festival that would include all the Arts – music, dance, literature, visual arts, theatre – making Renfrewshire’s contribution to Music Nation a unique project.

Each and every community has a story to tell about its past, its present and its connection with the rest of the world, and we are aiming to tell the Renfrewshire story through music and creativity – developing creative links across all the Arts, including new media and digital technology and an historical perspective. Historically, Renfrewshire is known for its thread weaving and for its religious connections - for St. Mirin and through Paisley Abbey to, Cluny, France. Music is the thread that weaves the story.

1Activities on Saturday 3 March will take place throughout the five local areas of Renfrewshire and into East Renfrewshire - from Lochwinnoch to Neilston to Renfrew and into Paisley. On Sunday 4 March Paisley Town Hall and Paisley Abbey will become 'The Hub', the focus of activity.

Never before have so many different cultural and diverse groups come together in Renfrewshire to celebrate and showcase their abilities – striving towards a personal best, as in the Olympics.
