Join the COVID-19 Renfrewshire Volunteer Reserve

Chamber News, Member News 31st March 2020

Renfrewshire residents are invited to join the county wide volunteer reserve list to bolster organisations & charities supporting those most at risk during the coronavirus epidemic.

The public response to the COVID-19 epidemic has been nothing short of incredible. Over the last two weeks Renfrewshire residents have already come together in a monumental way to support their neighbours, and the third sector applauds the efforts of so many who have come forward to support their communities.

Due to the brilliant efforts of the National Health Service for Scotland and the commitment of the public to stay at home, we find ourselves at a point of calm with many organisations feeling supported if low on resources. We are aware however that this is an ever changing situation and wish to be proactive in a response to situations as and when they arise.

With this in mind Engage Renfrewshire, the local third sector interface, have created a Renfrewshire wide volunteer reserve that local residents are invited to join. This reserve will aim to support local efforts coordinated by established third sector partners in aiding those most at risk in our communities.

As with national efforts promoted yesterday, Sunday 29th March, by first minister Nicola Sturgeon this reserve will be a bank of volunteers, ready to answer the call if and when it comes.

The national response promoted by the first minister and to be coordinated by the Red Cross will feed into these local efforts where required as well as larger national movements, such as calls to action for the NHS Scotland, should that need become evident.

The response from community groups has been similarly astounding. Renfrewshire Council have now compiled a list of local groups that are offering mutual-aid or more in their communities, and anyone looking to offer this level of local, informal volunteering is encouraged to do so.

This call to action is for those who feel they are fit & healthy to support efforts. The roles that will emerge over the next weeks will be vital roles that ensure those most at risk in our communities stay safe & healthy. Please remember to adhere to the guidance set by NHS Scotland.
