Glasgow Airport has today welcomed the announcement that Discover Airlines will launch two new direct routes to Frankfurt and Munich, significantly strengthening Glasgow’s connectivity with Germany and the rest of the world.
The Lufthansa Group airline will operate flights between Glasgow and Frankfurt as of 29 March 2027, operating up to six times per week. The airline will also launch a new summer route between Glasgow and Munich from 16 May 2027, operating up to twice weekly.
The announcement marks the return of direct connectivity between Glasgow and both Frankfurt and Munich while further strengthening links between Scotland and one of Europe’s most important economic and tourism markets.
Both routes will provide customers with access to Discover Airlines’ network and seamless onward connections through the Lufthansa Group’s major hubs, opening up travel opportunities across Europe and beyond.
As Germany’s financial centre, Frankfurt is a key gateway for business and international travel, while Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is renowned for its rich culture, historic architecture, vibrant food and drink scene, and world-famous festivals.
Chris Tibbett, Aviation Director at AGS Airports, said: “Germany is an incredibly important market for Scotland, supporting tourism, trade, education and business links, and these services significantly strengthen Glasgow Airport’s connectivity to one of Europe’s largest economies while reconnecting passengers to the extensive Lufthansa Group network beyond.
“There is also a fantastic leisure opportunity. Whether it’s a weekend exploring Munich’s famous beer gardens, experiencing Frankfurt’s vibrant city centre, or welcoming more German visitors to Glasgow and Scotland, these routes create real benefits on both sides.
“We would like to thank Discover Airlines, Glasgow City Council and VisitScotland for their support in helping bring these new services to market, and we look forward to working together to ensure their long-term success.”
Marco Götz, Chief Commercial Officer at Discover Airlines, said: We’re delighted to add Glasgow to our route network and, with it, welcome our very first destination in Scotland.
“We’re seeing growing demand for destinations that offer space, nature and opportunities to explore the outdoors, and Scotland delivers all of this in abundance.
“We look forward to connecting travellers from Frankfurt and Munich with Glasgow, with our new flights providing the only nonstop connections between these cities and Scotland’s largest city.”
Gwen Raez, Head of Business Development and Intermediary Marketing, said: “Germany is one of our most important international visitor markets and the introduction of these new seasonal services is further evidence of the strong demand we’re seeing for Scotland from Germany.
“The decision by Discover Airlines and the Lufthansa Group to launch these routes reflects growing confidence not only in Scotland as a destination, but also in the strength of our international air network and its ability to support sustainable growth. Direct connectivity is vital to growing Scotland’s visitor economy, making it easier for visitors to choose Scotland and explore all that our regions have to offer.
“These new services will strengthen international links, support tourism and business travel, and help deliver economic benefits for local businesses and communities.”
Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “This is great news for tourists and business travellers alike. Germany is one of Glasgow’s most important international markets, and these new direct services to Frankfurt and Munich will make it easier than ever for visitors to experience our vibrant, cultured and welcoming city, while strengthening links with one of Europe’s leading economic centres.
“They also provide Glasgow with valuable connections to key business and tourism markets and access to a global network of onward destinations. Through Destination Glasgow, we have been proud to support the development of these routes alongside our partners, helping to showcase the strength of Glasgow as an international destination for investment, tourism and trade.
“Congratulations to our partners at Glasgow Airport and Discover Airlines for recognising Glasgow’s growing reputation as a world-class and connected destination. This is a wonderful example of how partnership working can help attract investment and create new opportunities for our city.”
Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Tourism and Transport Stephen Flynn said: “I welcome the announcement that Discover Airlines will serve Scotland for the first time next year – significantly strengthening Scotland’s connectivity with Germany.
“Germany is Scotland’s largest European inbound visitor market and the launch of services from Glasgow to both Frankfurt and Munich, will help grow the economic benefits of tourism and provide important connectivity for business.
“This announcement is a huge show of confidence in the Scottish market, and I wish Discover every success with these routes, which I’m sure will prove popular with passengers and tourists alike.”
The Frankfurt service will operate up to six times weekly from 29 March 2027, while the Munich route will operate twice weekly from 16 May 2027.
